Just the Tip #1

Today's helpful tip is courtesy of my wonderful neighbor, Judy! Judy says that you can easily get rid of blood stains by soaking the soiled fabric in milk! Then all you have to do is wash as usual. You might want to take a peek at your item when it comes out of the washer and make sure the blood's totally gone, since the dryer will set any stain that left.

What a great tip and it's one that I've never heard before or even seen on Pinterest! Thanks, Judy!

Think Pink!

I'm sure you already know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I want to take this opportunity to tell you about my friend Suzie. This spring, Suzie found a lump in her breast and went to the doctor to get it checked out. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and began treatment right away.

After she lost her hair to chemo, Suzie asked me if I would do some portraits. She wasn't sure if she would share them, but thought she should document this time in her life. I was happy to oblige.

Isn't she beautiful?!
This month, Suzie decided to post the photos on facebook for all of her friends and family to see. She wanted to make sure that everyone realizes the importance of self breast exams. Suzie is only 32, has NO FAMILY HISTORY, and NO RISK FACTORS!

Southern Style Fried Green Tomatoes

It's sad when you have to rip all the plants out of the garden at the end of the season. We waited until there was a forecast for frost before we could bring ourselves to do it. The bright side is that you can harvest all the tomatoes that didn't have a chance to ripen. In my house, that can only mean one thing. Fried green tomatoes.

I don't like to fry things. I generally hate cooking anything that required me to stand at the stove for any length of time. (Have I mentioned that I have no patience?) For fried green tomatoes, I'll make an exception.

The original recipe I got from allrecipes.com and you can find it here. I was trying for an authentic southern recipe that would be similar to what Idgy and Ruth used in Fried Green Tomatoes. FYI, if you don't already know, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great movie and an even better book!

Anyway, the original recipe called for frying the tomatoes in bacon grease. I'm pretty old school, but even I don't have bacon grease on hand. I used the same lard I used in my chocolate chip cookies awhile back. I suppose you could use Crisco, but the flavor will be different.
