Spice Rack Makeover!

I adore vintage spice racks! They're so useful and the new ones you find in stores just don't have the character that I love. I found this gem at the flea market a while back....

It was pretty dirty and definitely needed some TLC. I knew I wanted to paint it, but it seemed pretty large for my kitchen. Then, I came across a photo of a spice rack that was being used for nail polish storage and I just had to try it!
For those of you that don't know, I'm a nail polish addict! I have a great collection and I change my nail color constantly. Putting my polishes on display and within easy reach was the perfect idea.

What I did:

First, I washed the spice rack with hot water and Dawn dish soap to get the grime off. Then, I let the wood dry completely in the sun.

Next, I set up a table covered with newspaper outside as a work surface.

I like to prime everything I paint. Primer's cheap and it keeps me from having to use multiple coats of paint. I used gray primer because I thought the silver paint I was going to use would need a darker base (It really didn't, but live and learn!)

After the primer was thoroughly dry, I painted on a couple coats of a pretty metallic silver and finished it with a clear satin spray sealer. I love the way it turned out! The only thing I wish I'd done differently on this project is to use a spray paint instead of regular latex paint. It was a pain to get in the nooks and crannies and the primer went on MUCH easier because of the spray can!

What do you think? Would you do something like this? I'd love to hear any tips or tricks you have!
